Nope, you must be thinking of someone else.  Matt McCarthy is definitely
from New Orleans. I visited him there earlier this year.  In another
echo, Ross Cassell says he thinks Matt was pointing off of Marc Lewis'
Sursum Corda BBS. He said he got a voicemail from Marc, who had made it
safely up to Meridian, MS, which is about 135 miles north of the MS
coastline.
