AFAICT the idea is to cut down on obstruction/interference when fighting a fish. Opposite high-profile extreme was some of those old 6-cylinder Mercury engines, where the cylinders were stacked up vertically on top of one another. No wrench in hand yet - gathering info on how to do the expected repairs, like replacing the water pump impeller.
