Subj : KNOPPIX 3.9 last CD To : MAURICE KINAL From : WAYNE CHIRNSIDE Date : Sat Jul 23 2005 05:21 pm -> WC> You know I might just dig out an old *nix textbook or two -> WC> I've here. -> Not a bad idea. Much of the core elements in Linux haven't changed that much -> since I learned Solaris way back when. What I discovered then was c-shell -> which led to c and the 'discovery' that these things are totally married to -> each other. I've got two *nix books here and two on C programming as well, One oddly is called "C by Discovery." Good book too, I recall seting up function calls to arrays, passing variables back and forth ect. -> Once I started playing with that concept the rest all started -> falling into place quite nicely. These days bash scripting takes the place of -> what c-shell did for me back then. It's not like I don't have the time for it and turning the T.V. on these days is just too depressing. -> Anyhow, that is what originally got me hooked on ttylinux and those -> old -> textbooks ought to be of great assistance to getting a feel for what is -> possible. However there are some noticable changes in the area of networking -> Linux boxes, mostly hardware issues, but you have to start somewhere. Right? -> One thing is for sure, kde won't get you there, and hence Knoppix and the like. -> Nice toys, quite a few 'broken', is all they are and without the basic -> knowledge that is all those will ever be. Oh I'm aware of the self imposed limitations of operating from the GUI, just need a bit of discipline to make a habit of picking up the books again. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5 * Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) .
