The only radios that work at the best they can are those with a balanced antenna because the ground is is not needed. Think about it a minute, the unbalanced antenna picks up the energy wavefront and now needs to dispose of the emf. Now ask yourself the question what is the reference for this source of potential, is it the radio or is it the Earth? Experiment with a galena or crystal radio and see for yourself: -> no ground = barely audible signal, good ground = loud signal M*i*k*e .... What are you looking at?
