You must be psychic - I was thinking about sending email your way to check up on you. 8) MS> but be assured i'm still very pleased when i'm able to read from MS> you! Nice of you to say that. 8) MS> I have no choice but to attend to other matters (so to speak), MS> i'm sorry i won't be ready for any form of sustained `FidoNet' MS> activity before some time and you can be certain that i miss this MS> hobby a lot... It was so comforting to find that you, Howard and MS> other guys do remain attracted to this field, when i finally got MS> back to my past where-abouts yesterday, Yes, I'm still using the DOS legacy apps for telecom. I lost my trusty 8086 and there has been a holdup on getting the swap completed between my younger son and I for the 8088 but I will eventually have the legacy 8088 setup to test with. MS> i couldn't resist the urge for a quick one-time intervention - i MS> wish to express a warm salute! :-) [...] I appreciate hearing from you. MS> In respect to this echo's topic, i have to concur when it comes MS> to the opinion that ~FTP~ seems to be a suitable file tranfer MS> protocol and i might add that it will work for all BBSers, MS> INCLUDING "LEGACY USERS". The upload and download of QWK packets using FTP is almost _too_ easy but it would be easier to help others to setup and use. With MultiMail having an XT version now there is no reason why anyone with any Intel platform capable of using DOS should not be able to participate in both FIDO and the Internet. MS> I've seen your comment about the `WC' BBSes and their cripled MS> `Kermit' protocol, or the need for some `ZMoDem' via ~TelNet~ MS> tuneup... i concur again! Sad to say but i'm pretty sure that the MS> late frenzy for `Linux' (after those for the `Win 3.1x/9x' wave), MS> euh... well, it's all killing one's hope for any fresh addition MS> to the 16-bit DOS world, relatively to ~TelNet~ `ZMoDem'/`Kermit' MS> capable terminal emulation programs, that is. The fact that certain BBS do an effective kermit transfer along with zmodem downloads convinces me the problem is as much at the BBS end as the user(s) end. MS> It appears so few efforts were made on the BBS software side, MS> during the last months, i'm forced to conclude that nothing may MS> ever be done about the ~TelNet~ client side! Nobody will review MS> the `MS-Kermit v3.15' code to add `ZMoDem', nor is `TextWin' MS> going to have its `ZMoDem' code put to real work (appart `RLogin' MS> sessions)! When I get my `486 system online and setup for programming it might be a bit easier since compiling and assembling modules will be much faster for me? A few `ifs' but could be ... MS> I thought i'd test programs like `Communique', `Panther Pro', MS> `Terminate', ect. for the ~BIOS INT-14~ or ~NASI/NCSI~ interfaces MS> but i guess no new/suitable 16-bit DOS ~TelNet~ client can ever MS> be hoped for. I'm using `Anzio v11.4w' with `TCPPort' & `EPPPd' MS> right now, it DownLoads a 1M9 .QWK message-packet at 1K56 cps on MS> a 486 DX-33 using a plain old internal 14K4 bps MoDem That's a good transfer rate over the Internet IMO. MS> and yet, UpLoading using `ZMoDem' can be a problem here too... MS> The only alternative that i foresee would be to give BBSers the MS> choice of `RLogin'/`TelNet' sessions so that they can try their MS> chance with `TextWin', to the least!... %-) [...] Hummm... Anyway. Yes, even LINUX users have problems using zmodem to upload. I contacted the author of `TextWin' and he wasn't interested in zmodem at all. Judging from his email(s) I would say he's not a BBS'er and only cares what works on the Internet (not a FIDO user either?). MS> Well, in short, i can see that "legacy" users have been left MS> behind long ago and there's no prospect of a better future for MS> them (after all, the source-code for `MS-Kermit' and `TextWin' MS> has been around for awhile)!... :'-( The available apps for the older 8088 and 8086s probably won't get much attention but the 16bit DOS isn't dead yet. NewDeal Inc. claims to have developed a DOS browser that will operate in 640k using DOS 3.3 on a `286 so DOS and legacy systems aren't dead yet. 8) http://www.newdealinc.com/productsn/websuite/ MS> Anyway. [...] At least, ~TelNet~ `ZMoDem' DownLoads seem MS> operational, overall... Yes, I do zmodem downloads every day using 16bit DOS apps via the Internet with TCP/IP. 8) MS> I can be patient and i'll try to keep an eye on `FidoNet's MS> related echoes, from time to time, in case something new MS> happens... I miss the Baldwin, Williams and others but what can i MS> say? I can no longer follow the hurd myself!... In any case, i MS> wish you the best! Have fun!!! 8-) My brother is going online soon (this month) with some bleeding edge tech W98SE system he is getting. If time permits maybe I can get my daughter to whip up a website for me for DOS legacy apps (she does this professionally). 8) That might be fun? > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > <| AngelFirecom |> __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ....
