Subj : FNOS FTP TCP/IP To : Charles Angelich From : Michel Samson Date : Fri Sep 22 2000 01:18 pm Hi Charles, About "Fnos Ftp Tcp/Ip" of September 9: HE> ...X/Y/Zmodem are still available. ...(epppd + tcpport + conex) HE> over ppp. It was a bit slow, but it worked. CA> Michel Samson had extremely mixed results when using his slower 8088 CA> system but much better results on his `386SX. I am of the opinion CA> that BBS should use FTP... ...close enough to zmodem speed... I've been away for quite a long time but be assured i'm still very pleased when i'm able to read from you! I have no choice but to attend to other matters (so to speak), i'm sorry i won't be ready for any form of sustained `FidoNet' activity before some time and you can be certain that i miss this hobby a lot... It was so comforting to find that you, Howard and other guys do remain attracted to this field, when i finally got back to my past where-abouts yesterday, i couldn't resist the urge for a quick one-time intervention - i wish to express a warm salute! :-) [...] In respect to this echo's topic, i have to concur when it comes to the opinion that ~FTP~ seems to be a suitable file tranfer protocol and i might add that it will work for all BBSers, INCLUDING "LEGACY USERS". I've seen your comment about the `WC' BBSes and their cripled `Kermit' protocol, or the need for some `ZMoDem' via ~TelNet~ tuneup... i concur again! Sad to say but i'm pretty sure that the late frenzy for `Linux' (after those for the `Win 3.1x/9x' wave), euh... well, it's all killing one's hope for any fresh addition to the 16-bit DOS world, relatively to ~TelNet~ `ZMoDem'/`Kermit' capable terminal emulation programs, that is. It appears so few efforts were made on the BBS software side, during the last months, i'm forced to conclude that nothing may ever be done about the ~TelNet~ client side! Nobody will review the `MS-Kermit v3.15' code to add `ZMoDem', nor is `TextWin' going to have its `ZMoDem' code put to real work (appart `RLogin' sessions)! I thought i'd test programs like `Communique', `Panther Pro', `Terminate', ect. for the ~BIOS INT-14~ or ~NASI/NCSI~ interfaces but i guess no new/suitable 16-bit DOS ~TelNet~ client can ever be hoped for. I'm using `Anzio v11.4w' with `TCPPort' & `EPPPd' right now, it DownLoads a 1M9 .QWK message-packet at 1K56 cps on a 486 DX-33 using a plain old internal 14K4 bps MoDem and yet, UpLoading using `ZMoDem' can be a problem here too... The only alternative that i foresee would be to give BBSers the choice of `RLogin'/`TelNet' sessions so that they can try their chance with `TextWin', to the least!... %-) [...] Hummm... Anyway. Before i finish, here is a comment i would have made about the processor-dependant results when using `EPPPd'/`TCPPort'/ `Conex' for doing `Zmodem' over ~TelNet~ file transfers: i've gathered, from observation, that the DOS version and terminal emulator ought to be quite "lightweight" since there's no "lighter" `EPPPd'/`TCPPort' version around to play with: the later are available as-is; hence, the focus on the DOS versions and terminal emulator instead. Using DOS v3.3 gives me an edge for my 8088 "legacy" PCs but `Conex' still feels too heavy a task-load. `{Commo}' would have made a great ~TelNet~ `ZMoDem'/`Kermit' capable terminal emulation program for "legacy" users, providing that a bit of code-tweaking can be made; only, it's a shame we were left with version 7.7 since the fall of 1998!... `Pather Pro' and `TeleMate' seem quite frale, the registered version of programs such as `Communique' is the only thing that would work in other cases (if i recall correctly), `Terminate' was way too big and slow when i tried, etc. Well, in short, i can see that "legacy" users have been left behind long ago and there's no prospect of a better future for them (after all, the source-code for `MS-Kermit' and `TextWin' has been around for awhile)!... :'-( Anyway. [...] At least, ~TelNet~ `ZMoDem' DownLoads seem operational, overall... %-> I can be patient and i'll try to keep an eye on `FidoNet's related echoes, from time to time, in case something new happens... I miss the Baldwin, Williams and others but what can i say? I can no longer follow the hurd myself!... In any case, i wish you the best! Have fun!!! 8-) Best salutations, Michel Samson ....Posted to `FidoNet' using DOS 16-bit ~TelNet~ "legacy" technology!... --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: Juxtaposition BBS, Telnet:juxtaposition.dynip.com (1:167/133) .
