My modem gateway --IS--, in fact, a modem gateway. I know this is probably becoming frustrating for you but I have no idea what a "modem gateway" is - apparently? I have never heard the expression before that I can recall. The size/shape/complexity of the equipment that you log into is of little/no importance in selecting or setting up your software. The _manner_ in which you connect _is_ of importance. You have managed to connect using FNOS but then the trouble starts from that point onward. I must therefore assume that the built-in PPP of FNOS is able to connect you and therefore I also assume that you are using a PPP connection. If this is correct then I would recommend getting a copy of NetTamer at this point since it is capable of doing what you require and is the least complex to setup and use. NetTamer will do telnet or FTP and we could at least learn from this what you can and cannot accomplish? ws> I wish we had a freenet here, or I was in DSL range of the phone ws> company. Folks in the center of town are being bombarded with all ws> sorts of offers. The cable system is a mess. I am bouncing off of ws> the Boston Library Consortium modem gateway. My ISP --IS-- my ws> FidoNET BBS. That is my only e-mail address. Something in what you say is missing because you said earlier that the BBS had a display telling you to use port 22 for FTP. If you dialed directly to your Boston Library Consortium and it was your BBS there would be no way for you to FTP to port 22 from within a telnet session AFAIK. ws> There was a Verizon strike. I don't know what "Verizon" is. ws> I am just looking for a short term interim solution to tide me ws> over; no ISP! I did use a WildCat! FTP client once, before they ws> turned the option off. This isn't that big a deal. I can swap ws> files manually. I have done it before. I am not concerned about FTP either. I am only attempting to determine how you are connected to the Internet. ws> Actually, your tip about FTP and Telnet ZMODEM retries getting ws> confused seems pretty helpful. That seems to be what is going on. ws> My problem is that I don't know what I am doing. If I had an ISP, ws> I would let the ISP do it. Generally ISPs will only "doit" for you if you run W9x or better. ws> I am my own ISP. That is the problem! An ISP pays fees to other computer systems to be allowed to access the Internet for you. You connect to them and they transfer through their very expensive connection you and hundreds of other persons all at once. I don't think that is what you are doing. 9) ___ * ATP/16bit 2.31 * ....
