Thanks, well from what I understand, substantial parts of the wheel are 
already available under perl, whereas if those parts are practical using php, 
I'll have to totally re-invent the wheel using php alone.

In one perl "tutorial" aimed at persons with a bit more programming 
experience than I have, the claim is you can learn perl in 10 minutes, 
regular expressions that are used in perl take a heck of a lot longer.
