 Perl is very difficult, IMHO. It's not designed for the casual user..

I first started out learning PHP by reading PHP code.. I then picked up a book 
on it, ("PHP" by Visual) and still reference it from time to time. I find the 
best resource ever created for PHP is still www.php.net
