This has happened before; AlterNIC did the same in the days of Network
Solutions' registrar monopoly.  The phrase "not integrated into DNS" is an
important one:  most people don't have the know-how to, or don't care to,
modify their systems to use a nonstandard naming scheme.

If you're inclined to want a new gTLD (global top level domain), your
efforts would be better spent paying attention to the ICANN developments and
providing input to ICANN and the various registrars where you can.

For instance, there's currently a proposal on the table to bring back the
"non-profit" tax status requirement to .ORG domain holders, including
revoking all domain holders violating the policy.  While good in spirit
about commercial users of .ORG domains, this completely screws people (like
me) who have used .ORG's as personal not-for-profit sites for many years.
