It's possible, but not easy. The subject is a variable length header field embedded in the header, so if you wish to make the subject longer (for example), then you have to rewrite the entire header which may then require an additional allocation block, which basically means adding a new header to the end of the SHD file and removing the old (effectively "moving" the header). A similar process occurs when editing the body of a message and it then requires more header blocks than the original message.
