afaik, most cell providers have an smtp/sms gateway, sometimes it's a bit 
cooky, but the problem is that you need an sms number for each user to be able 
to have replied to for it to work, and the inside tech, though not really so 
complex is kinda on the hush-hush from the telco industry...

example:
   at&t  ##########@wireless.att.net  (the ###'s are areacode+prefix+number)
   verison ##########@verizon.net (iirc)
   tmobile 1##########@tmomail.net

this will work for sending messages to a cell phone, can simply have an alias 
of username_mobile  that points to their mobile phone email/sms gateway address...
