Most US cellular companies have email<>SMS gateways in place already.  I know
that you can send a message to an AT&T wireless customer by sending email to
phonenumber@mobile.att.net

We switched to AT&T from Cingular (then they merged... we can run but cannot
hide), and from Sprint before that.  They all had similar functionality.
