You don't have to, but that's certainly an option.

Depending on what your definition of "build the bbs" is. As out-lined in
http://synchro.net/source.html, "more than one compiler" is required if you
wish to rebuild *everything*. However, you should only have to rebuild whatever
it is that you plan on modifying.
