1) The "line" may actually be several lines long, which (very) slightly 
   complicates the issue.

2) The merged file was al;ready going to STDOUT so you force me to use 
   STDERR for the dialogue.

3) It isn't any difficulty in the coding that I dislike, but rather the 
   "uncleanliness" of the need to talk to a human!
