A number of tr implementations don't handle that correctly for some reason. 
Why a space would be in the... *OH* it was Linux on a PPC NewBus MAC that
inspired that I think.  Not positive, but I think so... 99% of machine names
won't have a space... (Maybe it was a newer mac?)
