Now why didn't I locate that?  Anyway, thanks...  I've a throbbing 
pressure in my brain and if I wait long enough, it might become an *idea*!

BTW, Looking quickly, It seems that

  machine := $(shell if/then uname -m | tr "[A-Z]" "[a-z]" | tr " " "_" ; fi)

could simply be

  machine := $(shell if/then uname -m | tr "[A-Z] " "[a-z]_"; fi)

using one 'tr' instead of two.  Unless make introdudes some weird 
requirement?
