Well, just a guess, but I'd bet that Win32 is generating an error that
translates loosely as EDEADLK... NFS and the local file systems don't support
manditory locking, so you couldn't get a lock error opening files on them.

As for being different than Linux, FreeBSD doesn't use the SMBFS that Linux
uses.
