Subj : Re: Idea inspired by Mweeby To : Digital Man From : Time Warrior Date : Tue Oct 04 2005 01:06 pm From Newsgroup: alt.bbs.synchronet To: Digital Man Rob, Talking to Mweeby in depth about the text-to-speech thing has given me an idea that would bennefit him and other blind people as well as be of use to the rest of us too. To the best of my knowledge, regardless of shell, one text.dat is globally enforced. I think the structure below would allow for each shell to have it's own text.dat that aside from being a modding godsend, would allow blind people to not have to put up with extended ASCII while the rest of us can enjoy any 313373 nice looking mods that those enclinded might choose to create. If you implimented this, say as a v4 feature, i'd be more than happy to assist Mweeby in making a "Blind User Text-To-Speech" shell and also give it to you so Synchronet can natively support text-to-speech without the Sysop needing to go out of his or her way to accomodate blind users. Example below: C:\SBBS\SHELLS\ C:\SBBS\SHELLS\RENEGADE\ C:\SBBS\SHELLS\WILDCAT\ C:\SBBS\SHELLS\SCLASSIC\ C:\SBBS\SHELLS\SNOVICE\ C:\SBBS\SHELLS\RENEGADE\TEXT\ (ans and asc, etc.. files) C:\SBBS\SHELLS\RENEGADE\DATA\ (text.dat and anything else required here) C:\SBBS\SHELLS\RENEGADE\BIN\ (*.bin files as opposed to cluttering \EXEC\) C:\SBBS\SHELLS\RENEGADE\JS\ (*.js files as opposed to cluttering \EXEC\) C:\SBBS\SHELLS\RENEGADE\SRC\ (*.src files as opposed to cluttering \EXEC\) If you allow for the system variable of: SET BAJA="BIN" Then in theory, Synchronet could read that and when you run "baja logon.src" from C:\SBBS\SHELLS\ANYTHING-AT-ALL\SRC\ it would compile and automatically place it in C:\SBBS\SHELLS\ANYTHING-AT-ALL\BIN\. This would cut down on directory clutter and make things more efficient and easier to find. As for the GUI for "Edit Text Strings" just have that section extend out to another menu that simply lists the shell name as per whatever you have configured and when you click on that, it'll open the proper text.dat file. Aside from Rob, what to the rest of you think? -- .---------------------------------------------------------------. | [TiME WaRRiOR] aka [Dave Kelso] AIM: Twar782 | +o Malkavia BBS | | www : synchsupport.net - malkaviabbs.com - xpresit.net | | www$: josephsjewelersonline.com - preferedinsurance.com | | @: time.warrior@malkaviabbs. com | \______________________________________________________________/ --- Synchronet 3.12a-Win32 NewsLink 1.76 * Malkavia - Chicago, IL - telnet://malkaviabbs.com --- Synchronet 3.13b-Win32 NewsLink 1.83 .
