Well I don't advertise my Tourettes Syndrome unless I see a means of using it to be a wise ass in my posts! Just as our voice conversation about your desire to mod things like LORD using sarcasm about blindness. "Blind Man" attacks with his AK-47 and MISSES! Go figure! "Blind Man" hits you with his AK-17 for 5 damage. Lucky shot, asshole! "Rabid Seeing-eye Dog" attacks with his "Rabies" and MISSES! "Rabbid Seeing-eye Dog" hits you with his "Rabies" for 5 damage. It's also kinda like I said in the email about the possibilities for menus that are text-to-speech complient. "Can you hear me now? No? Then you obviously are not blind!" SMILES. Also, letting people know you are blind may eliminate one major annoyance. Notice I said SMILES instead of typing :-). This is because I know your speech reader will more accurately interperate SMILES where as :-) may not translate over too smoothly. A word of advice on that, seeing as i'm sure there is no difference in keyboard input. When you hit my matrix login, it is set on the login command by default. Simply press ENTER when you hit that menu and it will take you to the login prompt. For new blind users, all they would need to do is arrow down once and hit ENTER. That will direct them into the new user application. Do you think explaining this before the prelogin ansi would work in your speech reader? As long as your speech reader will incercept it, I can have it display and clear screen so fast that non-blind users won't even know its there, but blind users would know what to do once they hit the matrix login. Would this work? > A little word about screen readers and how they react to extended ascii. > At least under windows. there are only about 3 most widely used screen > reading programs for blind windows users. they are Job Access With Speech > (More commonly known as JAWS) > http://www.freedomscientific.com > , > Window Eyes, > http://www.gwmicro.com, > and one called Hal 95, but I know little or > nothing about that, but it's popular in the UK and other places in the > world. > I use JAWS, and although this program is great at what it does, when it > encounters extended ASCII, it thinks it's reading accent marks used in > various foreign languages, French, or German for instance. > It's quite easy to turn off the speaking of conventional punctuation, > besides, unless you were proof reading something, you don't want to hear > every , . - \ or whatever. One would think that these programs would be more intelligent when it comes to extended ASCII. Any computer tech / programmer in the software industry should know that blind people are using speech readers and any ASCII chrs that might pop up for any reason at all (BBS or non-bbs related) would be a major annoyance. > I think most of my blind friends feel that bbses are gone the way of the > 300 baud modem, and no amount of attempting to explain about Synchronet > and telnet boards seems to work. I think most old schoolers would feel that way, at least the ignorant ones. I don't think its what your saying they are closed to but how you are saying it. A wise man once said it's all about the presentation! GRINS. I've actually managed to describe BBSes to new school newbies who know nothing about them in such a way that they thought it was the next best thing to sliced bread. If you explain it in a more main stream line of speaking and focus only on the key pro's and what con's it does not have compared to the rest of the internet, you'll spark the attention of the more open minded. > Now if you want to see something really cool, check out > http://www.zonebbs.com . I'll check it out when I get the time to and let you know if its just as nice from the visual perspective as it is from yours.
