I don't think programming skills are needed to run Linux. Modifications are almost always to text files. Being able to program in C/C++ is a big help if you want to create something but that's not what you're talking about, is it? You make web pages, so programming in the C's isn't out of the question. If your situation allows, see about some classes evenings or online. Who knows, maybe you will end up contributing to Sync in some way in the future. If you really want to, it can happen. Good Luck!
