It does require the full gcc and g++ packages to be installed, as well as cvs, but I believe that's the only thing I needed to do to finish it through. Very nicely done Makefile, guys! Hey, I can't remember how I made the BBS relay all outbound SMTP through my other (local) mail server. I changed the sbbs.ini RelayHost settings to match what works on the FreeBSD box, but it still seems to want to do MX lookups and direct delivery. This is a problem for my "local" domains, as they resolve to an inaccessible external interface... I need to relay off to an internal IP address.
