Yes, they are noticable. And most people miss most things that are in plain sight. For an unrelated but parrelel example -- I was once representing josephsjewelersonline.com at a local carneval here at a catholic school called St. Pascals. Every night, a different band played. I lost count of how many people walked up to me and asked "Hey, what band is playing tonight?" when the 15 foot wide LIGHTED sign said as big as life "Playing Tonight: So-n-Such". If you use the 00index.htm it loads in a web browswer. If that is the *only* way to see the long description, then yes, you *are* forcing the web interface. I happen to like the interface. However, not everyone is me and seeing as most people miss whats right in front of them, they won't even know its there. You could have a file in the root called "read_this_or_the_ftp_wont_work_right.txt" and 99.9% of people won't even notice it's there. It's just like the age old problem of users not reading telnet and dialup ansi menus and screens. The commands are there. The explanations are there. But the Sysop still gets the email of "Hey how do I access the....". Websites are no different. My parents miss the blatantly obvious instructions every day. Sometimes I think if there was a website in text size 8 that said (using my Dad as an example) "HEY WALLY! CLICK ME! I'M THE OPTION YOU WANT TO DO SUCH-N-SUCH!" that he would *still* phone upstairs to me and ask what to do and claim he can't figure it out. lol > Long filenames are usefull for anything that is GUI only. Then it's a good thing I'm not suggesting anything be disallowed but rather more allowances made. -- .---------------------------------------------------------------. | [TiME WaRRiOR] aka [Dave Kelso] AIM: Twar782 | +o Malkavia BBS | | www : synchsupport.net - malkaviabbs.com - xpresit.net | | www$: josephsjewelersonline.com - preferedinsurance.com | | @: time.warrior@malkaviabbs. com | \______________________________________________________________/ --- Synchronet 3.12a-Win32 NewsLink 1.76 * Malkavia - Chicago, IL - telnet://malkaviabbs.com --- Synchronet 3.13a-Win32 NewsLink 1.83 .
