I don't see how I'm forcing people to use a web interface at all.  The 00index
files exist for every FTP users, are the first thing on the list, and has a
fairly friendly name.  If they're paying attention to the directory list,
they'll see it.

Long filenames are usefull for anything that is GUI only.  As for allowing long
file names, that gets done because some files may have them.  *nix doesn't have
an interface for automatic short filename creation, so it would be harder to
disallow long filenames than to support them.
