I have to agree, and I know me saying this to BBSers/MUDers is preaching to
the choir but it is, as you said overkill - and often ruins something nice ;)
I dislike most games with 3D engines too, but my pet-hate is good games,
which adopt 3D engines to keep up with technology... 2 prime examples are
probably Monkey Island and Command & Conquer - which I loved, until they
decided to adopt 3D Engines ;)
