My memory seems a little vague, but isn't there a file that you can 
write a long description to that will be used as the description for the 
file?

You could use any console-mode ID3 dumper utility to write to this file 
and then the results would become the description.  If absolutely 
necessary, you could "use MP3::Tag;" in a simple Perl script to do it.  
You could also run /usr/local/bin/rdjpgcom to get descriptions for JPEG 
images, or /usr/bin/vorbiscomment for .ogg files, and so forth.
