I have heard a number of professors at McMaster University griping that
students, especially the batch who graduated the 4 year high school program,
seem to be completely lacking in analytical skills.

I agree with you, the ability to think through a problem is far more
important than the ability to memorize a list of facts and there is
definately lots of room in the education system for both to co-exist.

IMHO, level 2 calculus during a summer school course will help with the need
for critical thinking :>  Too much to memorize, need to be able to derive
some of it on the fly heh.
