Presumably, it would allow the BBS to 'miss' ANSI sequences.

Take your cursor-up/down navigation with ESC to exit.  If, for instance, 
TCP/IP inserted just the wrong delay, a cursor-up ( ESC [ A ) could be 
taken as an EXIT from the current menu, followed by an "[" which might be 
ignored, followed by an "A" option at the parent menu, which could do just 
about anything...
