I can't speak for the NEC version of the z80, but I used the AMD version 
which was functionally identical, but it was cheaper and could be run at 
higher clock speeds.  I ran my 2.5 MHz AMD Z80 at 4.5 MHz and it performed 
perfectly.  It would run at 6 MHz too, but it got flakey.
