Oh, I don't necessarily mean everything will stop WORKING (hell, old DOS stuff still work to this day, if a little buggy in some multi-tasking environments), just that there was that fundamental shift in compatibilities in software suites that essentially forced the world to replace everything in their computer systems to keep up with Gates' idea of what an OS is. Sure, it's a trend that continues, rather inevitably, through subsequent versions, but I remember thinking B.G. had really put the boot to the pants of the computer world with that shift to '95 to seize the market. Microsoft's marketing reminds me a lot of those Relacore commercials. High pressure circular logic sales pitches. "Stress increases cortisol! Cortisol increases belly fat! Relacore decreases Cortisol!! YOU NEED RELACORE!!!!!" Which is an attempt to kick-start the stress->fat cycle by stressing people into thinking they're already inevitably fat. Because they're stressed. Because they're fat. Because they're stressed... Just strikes me as being an awful lot like Microsoft products are marketed, particularly when there's a fundamental shift in operation involved.
