Actually, no.

The first microprocessor chip was the Intel 4004, which was then followed 
by the Intel 4040.  Both of these were 4-bit chips.  The 8008 was an 8-bit 
chip that came out some time between the release of the two 4-bit parts.  
I don't know if anybody built general purpose computing systems around it.  
The Altair 8800 was based on the 8080 chip.
