Subj : Re: Synchronet for FreeBS To : alt.bbs.synchronet From : Christine Date : Wed Aug 10 2005 05:50 pm From Newsgroup: alt.bbs.synchronet In my case, and possibly the cases of other paranoid unix people, running anything with root is a something to do only if there is absolutely no other way... even something that drops the privileges immediately, makes me nervous... I don't run apache, sendmail, etc as root... and the few things that do run as root, I run jailed... because of that paranoia thing... What I did to make the sbbs.pid work, is this : touch /home/sbbs/logs/sbbs.pid then with a quick jump to root privs, ln -s /home/sbbs/logs/sbbs.pid /var/run/sbbs.pid It works fine, and synchronet is never run with root privileges, so I'm a happy camper... but that just feels inelegant to me :) So, I'll recompile and remove the link... The reason to want to change it, is to have better control of access privileges, make it easier to run the entire process in a jail, virtualize it, or even run more than one instance at a time if you want to run two or more synchronet bbs's on the same server, without corrupting the sbbs.pid.... right now, if I run two synchronet bbs's, say with MySyncBBS.com on telnet port 2323 and SuperSecretSyncBBS.com on telnet port 3232, the sbbs.pid is in trouble... unless of course, I recompile it to a relative pathname, or use an envariable, which I will probably do because I'm strange and thing envariables are all cute and cuddly :) --- Synchronet 3.12b-Win32 NewsLink 1.83 .
