Thanks to Digital Man's input, I realized a problem in my own setup
that prevented the /var/run/sbbs.pid file from being created (because I
run as user/group sbbs from the start so Synchronet never has a chance
to create the file with the needed root access).

That corrected, (I will explain how I did it without having Synchronet
run as root if anyone wants), the file is now created nicely, and I've
been able to strip that part out of the script.

The upshot of this is, a new version has been posted to the same URL
which will hopefully fix the problem once and for all :)
