Here's what I see (wget'd the latest version of your script just now):

root@ns2# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/sbbsctl.sh start
/usr/local/sbbs/logs/synchronet.pid

       - Synchronet successfully started.
root@ns2# ll /usr/local/sbbs/logs/synchronet.pid

root@ns2# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/sbbsctl.sh status
/usr/local/sbbs/logs/synchronet.pid

       - Synchronet is not currently running.

       - Most recent log entries
