I use Konsole under KDE (3.2.3) and have configured it with the size set 
to 80x45 which lets me read longer messages easily, and maintains the 
normal wrap.  I don't know why your system is different.

Sorry, I'm not giving up the ability to use my browser, XMMS, Thunderbird, 
and other X-based apps simultaneously, plus 20 lines of text in the 
console, not to mention three other console windows open at the same time.
