The Thunderbird error is as follows:

An error occurred while sending mail.  The mail server responded: Unknown

Server log shows:

Actually this one is more along the lines that TB contacts the server and says
"Hey, I have an email for VERT/BBSNAME!sysop"  and the email server says
"Nope, we don't have that guy here."

So I guess I was wrong about the forward slash anyways..  I guess thats just NNTP.
