Subj : Market Action To : All From : Paul Rogers Date : Tue Aug 03 2004 04:20 pm

Guess I did better than the market today--so far so good. Prices fell
back below the 200-day Moving Average, and volume rose though still -5%
below average.

Ostensibly the "reason" was higher crude prices, above $44/40G barrel,
and sagging consumer spending. Some people must be doing good, I see a
lot of new cars on the road. But this country's economy won't be in any
shape one can be confident in, until employment and wages improve. It
isn't going to be enough for us to have part time jobs without bennies.
I'm not at all surprized about the consumer confidence level.

I am enough the student of history to be able to draw parallels between
what's happening to the American economy and, say, that of England in
the 19th Century. England began the "industrial revolution", but in the
19th Century many of the mill and manufacturing jobs moved out to a more
productive environment, the USA and its "rustbelt". England went into a
long economic decline. Capitalism is no respector of privelege, not of
England's nor America's. We need new, quality jobs to keep us all
employed. Walmart and the "race to the bottom" isn't going to cut it.
And then we need to keep them here. We'll find out who's listening.

Timing Signals: I don't use or recommend timing signals, but they're
fun to watch. If I did though, well, I might use something like this.
(Be warned!! It tends to whipsaw around signal points!)

Last Signal: SELL Date: 07/02/04 S&P: 1125
Winner or Loser: Winner By: +12
