Subj : Hmmm To : All From : Ed Grinnell Date : Sun Jun 11 2000 08:34 am I have to laugh at all the Arena Football dreamers. You keep hearing about how Kurt Warner made it so "great for us" but the fact is that if Warner had spent all his time in Arena Football, he wouldn't have gotten a tryout. While the AFL gave him a chance to play regularly, it wasn't until he took time to go to NFL Europe that he showed the NFL that he could play against NFL players. While NFL scouts have been around the AFL and some of the players have been given tryouts, most of the talent is coming for NFL Europe and the CFL. **** For goodness sake, leave Ray Lewis alone. The man made a mistake in judgement, HOWEVER; let's not forget that the ONLY reason why he was on trial was because the prosecution was trying to get him to fink on his friends. They knew that he wasn't guilty but he did know what was going on. Those that are calling for his suspension are off-base. What Lewis and a lot of his peers need to do is to take stock in their so-called friends and begin to make a clean break from those that are criminally inclined. Oh, I know that sounds cold but I can tell you from personal experience that sometimes, you have to tell your friends from high school that you're tired of getting in trouble because of them. **** Isn't it amazing that years ago when players were talking about leaving Indiana because they were tired of the way that Knight treated them that the press called them a bunch of wimps and wusses and said that they were prime examples of what was wrong with "today's" athlete. Now, these same guys are taking the Hoosiers to task for not getting on to Knight sooner and saying that it's Indiana's fault that Knight is so out of control. Don't you think that if the Hoosiers had a little support from the media (as well as their boosters), they'd have done the "right" thing years ago? **** Despite the fact that Game 5 (and possibly Game 6) had great ratings, the NHL has seen ratings drop from the year before. For years, all I've heard from NHL apologists was that Fox was screwing up the NHL and that it was all Fox's fault. Once ABC got it, it was all going to be better. Well, it didn't happen but there is hope. If the NHL can keep people from seeing it as a goon's league, they've got a chance (The start of Game 6 didn't help). Fighting IS down, however; some of that is artificial. To be honest, fighting IS down but if you only read summaries in your paper and don't see the game, you'd think it was down even more. Some of those fights are called "roughing" but if you were watching the game, it definitely wasn't roughing. BTW, years ago, a penalty situation stayed that way for the duration. Because of this, the Canadiens would score two or even three goals and teams would find themselves in a deep hole quickly. Rather than getting their players to foul less, they changed the rules so that if a team scored a power play goal, they went back to full strength. I think that this has led to a lessening of the effect of penalties and that the NHL should go back to the old rule. If not for all situations then maybe only for those situations were a goon used a stick on his opponent. Bring back skill to the game and let's get rid of the goons. I don't know about you but I get a lot more enjoyment out of a game if I see it being played as it was meant to be played. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Jerry Jones is the Anti-Christ (1:170/1701) .
