Interesting, the English "mothballing" comes from the practice of storing clothes, blanletrs, rugs etc, for long periods in chests with mothballs (which stop carpet moths and other insects from attacking them. The Russian "greasing" would seem to come from the practice of storing military rifles and other similar machinery packed in grease or oil to prevent it from rusting or deteriorating in other ways...
