Subj : CITY] Move 1: A Quick Description To : All From : Andrew_S._Toth@wlm.toronto.on.ca Date : Fri Aug 11 2000 08:19 pm From: Andrew_S._Toth@wlm.toronto.on.ca (Andrew S. To: Kym VanVliet, Herman Hardin, David Dror Subject: CITY] Move 1: A Quick Description This isn't really a Move, but I'll call it that anyway. This is a basic description of the city itself, as the characters would know it. Samar, obviously, will be a little bit more familiar, and so I'll give David some information on the side. The walls around Tandagor are 20 feet thick and 50 feet tall. There are 6 main gates, and one not-so-main gate (outside entry to the Thieves' District). Each of the gates has a tower on either side that is half again the height and width of the wall. The coast runs east-west. The city basically radiates out from the Council grounds, which east-west central, with the sea to the south. Across the harbour is a small island on which stands the prison. To the east lies the Thieves' District (though all of an official capacity choose not to recognize it as that), to the north lies the Temple District and the fortress-like Mercenaries' Guildhouse. To the south is the Harbour District. A river runs through the eastern part of the city, which is crossed by a ferry , and a bridge in the Thieves' District. Just north of the Thieves' District are the Smithies. A lesser wall seperates the Thieves' District from the rest of the city; needless to say, it's an unpleasant place to be after dark. Right against the north wall of the Council grounds is the Great Library, across the street from that is the Envoy House (where all visiting dignitaries, etc., stay). Spread throughout the city are various merchants, food salespersons, training halls, stables, inns, taverns, guildhouses, and guildhalls (both for meeting and hiring). Just north-east of the Council grounds stands The Circle, which is the city's Coliseum, for the most part. Not only gladiatorial events are held there, but also races. A note on names: it is extremely expensive to purchase a name for a place of business, such as The Rank And File (an inn only for soldiers), and so most places are simply merchants or food salespersons, or inns, or taverns, or whatever.
