I can only refer you to Whitehead's _Science in the Modern World_ and even more specifically, Voegelin's "The Origins of Scientism" (Social Research 15 (1948), republished in Collected Works 10, pp168ff) The religious treatment of his findings, leading to phenomenalism (rooting of ALL of the sciences in mathematics and materialism) held sway until Einstein and others. In the 20th century science in general has been pretty much set free from the fall into the Enlightenment and even at the time of Newton there were his challengers.
