I don't know. Like I said, there are many contradictions in Jewish
teachings about this. (We don't view contradictions as being something
leading to "error" - "what this one says, and what that one says, both
are the words of the Living G-d".) Also, on top of that, Judaism
does not focus on the afterlife very much; though it certainly
teaches that there is reward and punishment.

No, this interpretation does not refer to non-Jews.

Todd, that's requirements for *Jews*. Jews always have tougher
requirements concerning mitzvos than non-Jews; who are only obligated,
as I'm sure you've heard before, to the 7 [catagories of] Mitzvos of
Bnai Noach; and even then in a less strict form than Jews. (According
to all authorities, for example, Islam is not idolatrous; it is
permitted for a gentile, while a Jew who becomes a Muslim, cholila,
is an apostate.) Keep in mind also that many gedolim say today that
this generation of Jews, especially those raised in an assimilated
environment, are like tinuk benishbim.
