One of the most prominant sages (understatement) of the twentieth century, the Chofetz Chaim, is known by the name of his first and one of several of his works on the laws concerning the avoidance of lashon hara (or "gossip"; though lashon hara includes forbidden speach that is true as well as the English word "gossip"). Many books, including ones in English and internet mailing lists, are published concerning this due to the Chofetz Chaim's efforts in bringing this issue to the fore. When taken seriously, it can make a major change in one's lifestyle; after reading the Chofetz Chaim's works and derivitives therof, it becomes clear how much of what seems to be permitted speach is actually forbidden. (Of course, Orthodox Jews aren't literalists; so maybe your critique wasn't written to include us?) JBL .... What is mind? No matter! What is matter?
