Subj : Big fat warning, oh my! What manuscripts are you referring to? > Please tell me you know. :-) I think a link between the two numbers > is interesting, but... but... TH> I believe that the variant number is 616, not 613. I couldn't tell TH> you which texts that appears in though. Some Old Latin (i.e, pre-Vulgate) MSS. Irenaeus also makes mention of seeing MSS with that number (616). That the numerology works for both Latin (616) and Greek (666) versions of Nero's name and title is one important piece of evidence that "John" was indicating Nero. (Quotes around John because it is very evident that the same person could not have written the gospel and Rev.) Other important pieces of evidence: 1) It was under Nero that the war which devestated Jerusalem began. 2) Nero did have pretensions that his reign would inaugurate a new era in history. (Are you paying attention, Frank?) 3) There was a widespread _Nero redivivus_ legend, to the effect that Nero would return. In fact, there were several imposters. 4) Combined with the above, and Nero's suicide by knife in the throat, this is a good match with the mysterious head that revived. On philosophical grounds, though, Revelation is quite silly-- but still luridly entertaining. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 [NR] * Origin: America's favorite whine - it's your fault! (1:261/1000) .
