for some reason the readdir just won't read the directory i've tried a few 
different versions of perl. pkt creation is mangled...seems to me i did have  a 
version that worked, though...

at this point i'd take any pkt writing code, that project got put on hold till 
i discover whatever the obvious thing is i'm missing
