Should doesn't help much but you're right that it should.

Also extremely limited as far as addressing goes.  Why the integer values with 
no rhyme or reason wrt ordering?

It isn't up to me alone.  I'd choose tar/gzip.  What's the odds that I will be 
in step with that choice?
