I'd prefer keeping text files as text files and then formatting them to whatever is wanted after that. I can see how Perl would fit in perfectly towards that end and thus a BBS, or even end user, has far greater control what the end result will appear and behave like on their system and, in the case of a BBS, what it looks like on a terminal/browser/whatever so that users of that BBS can use whatever they're using and don't require any additional software to do Fido messaging or reading (<- in the case of a news-type echo). Greater control over formatting is the key and a pkt <-> whatever filter would be of greater value then any past/current/(maybe future) Fido editor and other software.
