That's not really the issue. Just poll your uplink every 15 Minutes and you get 
a bunch of fresh mails (of course that only works if your uplink does the 
same). The real issue is that slashdot is moderated and somebody preselects the 
news they then put on their site. So it is filtered and does not contain too 
much crap.
