   I did figure what I had wrong.   Until I can figure a better way, I'm using 
tr/// to just take the apostrophes (single quotes) out all together.  What I 
had, that I thought worked when I was using the postgresql database, did not 
work at all with mysql...   I know I had it working then;  I'm just not sure 
that the code I'm working from is actually the most recent version...<g>

  This is how I'm doing it now, removing it altogether...    

$name =~ tr/'//d;   #take care of single quotes in system name fields


  And this is how I was doing with postgresql, by escapeing the char instead of 
deleteing it;


$name =~ tr/'/\'/;   #take care of single quotes in system name fields
 

  Don't currently have the machine that had postresql on it running ( the drive 
died...<sigh>), but when I do I'll be able to check it...
