you might have to fiddle with these things...i use qemm for memory management 
on the bbs, and i've been able to squeeze every last byte possible...the qemm 
optimize program is pretty good...

i used 'manifest' comes with qemm and/or desqview. it can run as a tsr, but 
unless you use some sort of multitasking on dos, i don't know how you'd run it 
while perl was running, i don't know if manifest would pop up during a perl 
session...
